When I Was Asked to Leave the Pool Because of My Skin
And why I’ll never let another girl feel ashamed of her beauty again.
I was maybe 8 or 9 years old.
It was summer. I was at a public pool with my sisters. And for a little while, I felt free.
My skin, inflamed from eczema, was finally getting a break. The coolness of the water felt soothing—like it was washing away the itch, the discomfort, the embarrassment. I remember laughing, just being a kid.
Until I wasn’t.
A woman—probably someone’s mom—walked up to me, with this look of disgust on her face.
She didn’t ask if I was okay. She didn’t ask what I had.
She just said:
“You need to get out of the pool. You’re going to spread that to everyone.”
I froze.
I was confused.
Then I was mortified.
I didn’t even cry. I just climbed out of the water, grabbed my towel, and sat on the side—feeling like I was dirty. Like something was wrong with me. Like I didn’t belong in a space meant for joy and childhood.
That moment stuck with me.
And if you’ve ever had eczema, psoriasis, acne, scarring—or any visible skin condition—you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Skin Isn’t Just Skin.
It’s Our Story. Our Identity. Our Shield.
Growing up, I learned how to cover it up.
How to hide.
How to tolerate the stares, the unsolicited comments, the pity.
I learned how to say, “It’s fine,” even when it wasn’t.
I became tough. Resilient. But also… quiet about my pain.
For years, I felt like my skin was a problem I had to fix before I could be accepted, loved, or even seen.
That’s Why I Created Qoolness
I created it for that little girl sitting by the side of the pool.
I created it for the woman who cancels plans when her skin flares up.
I created it for anyone who’s ever felt ashamed of their reflection.
I didn’t want to just make skincare. I wanted to make hope in a bottle.
I want products that didn’t just soothe the skin but honor it. Love it. Respect it.
That’s why I use clean, natural ingredients - many of them inspired by ancestral wisdom and healing traditions.
That’s why I formulate in small batches, by hand, with intention and integrity.
That’s why I call it Qoolness—because cool, calm, radiant skin should feel effortless, not like a battle.
